The Evolution of Colour (until 10 January 2027)

The Frieder Burda Museum is presenting the exhibition ‘The Unfolding of Colour: Simon Hantaï’. Simon Hantaï (1922–2008) is regarded as one of the most significant figures of international post-war modernism. Born in Hungary, the artist emigrated to Paris in 1948 and soon became part of the avant-garde scene. Following a surrealist phase, he turned to informal painting in the 1950s and engaged intensively with the work of Jackson Pollock. From 1960 onwards, he developed the ‘pliage comme méthode’: he covered folded canvases with oil or acrylic paint, thereby creating vibrant, random patterns of colour and form. Featuring around 40 key works – some of them monumental – spanning four decades, the exhibition provides a multifaceted overview of Hantaï’s oeuvre and pays tribute to his outstanding contribution to international post-war abstraction. Lenders include, amongst others, the Musée d’art contemporain de Bordeaux, the Fondation Gandur pour l’Art in Geneva, the Fondation Louis Vuitton, the Musée d’art moderne de Paris and the Musée d’art moderne et contemporain de Saint-Étienne.
